The 15 Best Camping Mattresses for Couples (in 2021) - find the best camping mattress for couples

Choosing the Best Camping Mattress for Couples

There is not just one “best camping mattress for couples” because every couple’s needs are different. The top factors to consider are: comfort, price, weight and size, motion transfer, and noise when moving. Depending on how well you sleep and how you intend to use the mattress, some of these factors will be more or less important to you.

For example, couples that want to backpack to their campsite in the backcountry should consider size and weight first. Light sleepers will want to consider motion transfer and noise when moving.

With that being said, here are my top picks for different types of the best camping mattresses for couples:

Top Picks

Exped MegaMat Duo 10

Exped MegaMat Duo 10 Review

Amazon rating: 4.6 (77 ratings)

Price: $$$

About this Camping Mattress

The Exped MegaMat Duo 10 mattress is both self-inflating and insulated, making it a favorite for many couples, especially when sleeping on the cold ground. It also features a mini-pump so you can adjust the firmness. It packs up to 22 x 11 inches in the convenient carrying sack that it comes in and weighs about 7.5 lbs; so not exactly an ultralight backpacker’s sleeping pad but very good if you’re trying to pack light for car camping or not hiking too far to your camp spot.

The downside? This mattress is expensive. At the time of this writing, the normal size is $299 and the extra long and wide is $350. It also takes a little while for the mattress to fully inflate, which can test your patience when you’re ready for bed and can be somewhat difficult to deflate completely.

In conclusion, the Exped MegaMat Duo 10 is a great option for comfort and somewhat small packed size if you don’t mind spending the money.

Pros:Cons:
  • Self-Inflating, with mini-pump for adjusting firmness

  • Insulated

  • Fairly compact and light
  • Expensive

  • Slow to inflate

Lightspeed Outdoors Double Air Bed

Lightspeed Outdoors Double Air Bed Review

Amazon rating: 4.3 (92 ratings)

Price: $$

About this Air Bed

The Lightspeed Outdoors Double Air Bed is one of the better air beds, specifically made for camping with extra durability. It features a battery operated electric pump and a patented stabilizing system that claims to reduce bouncing from your partner’s movements, which works pretty well…for an air mattress. However, if you’re very sensitive to your partner moving, you should probably consider a sleeping pad or cot.

What makes this mattress unique is that it is both PVC and phthalate free. PVC is not bad itself but it typically contains plasticizers like phthalates which are best to avoid.

Pros:Cons:
  • Phthalate free

  • Reduced motion transfer
  • Requires electricity for pump

REI Kingdom Insulated Sleep System 40

REI Kingdom Insulated Sleep System 40 Review

REI rating: 4.4 (40 reviews)

Price: $$$

About this Sleep System

The REI Kingdom Insulated Sleep System 40 is built for convenience as everything you need to sleep is contained together in one unit, except pillows. On the bottom is an air mattress but that is topped with a quilted mattress cover for added insulation and comfort. Then there is a top-sheet that attaches to prevent drafts and also an insulated top quilt. The air mattress needs to be inflated manually (pump included) but it doesn’t take a huge amount of air so it’s not a major inconvenience.

The sleep system is rated down to 40°F (4.4°C) but you could bring a sleeping bag or extra blankets if it will be colder at night. Some customers have found it to be a little drafty when only using the sheet and blanket provided in the system.

The biggest downsides are the price and the weight. Going for around $300 at the time of this writing, the convenience of this all-in-one sleep system doesn’t justify the high price tag in my opinion. It packs down 23 x 21 x 17 inches which is a bit bulky and it weighs a little over 15 pounds. This system is definitely for car camping so don’t plan on hiking anywhere with it.

Pros:Cons:
  • Convenient and comfortable

  • Mattress, mattress cover, top sheet, and insulated quilt are all contained in one unit
  • Expensive

  • A little bulky and heavy

Coleman Double-High Air Mattress

Coleman Double-High Air Mattress Review

Amazon rating: 4.5 (3,592 ratings)

Price: $

About this Air Mattress

When I’m car camping, I love a big, tall air mattress and the Coleman Double-High Air Mattress fits the bill. You will get more durability than just a regular air mattress built for indoor use as this one is built with camping in mind. And as one of the cheapest camping mattress for couples on this list, you’ll have money leftover for more camping trips!

As for the downsides: with any air mattress, you’re going to feel your partners movements. This mattress doesn’t have much to dampen the movements. I got a great night’s sleep on this but my wife’s movements don’t bother me much.

Furthermore, this mattress doesn’t come with a pump, so make sure you’ve got that covered or you’ll be sleeping on the ground. The mattress holds a lot of air so using a hand pump is a real pain. We recommend the D-battery powered Handheld Pump from Coleman.

Pros:Cons:
  • Inexpensive

  • Tall and comfortable

  • Feel partner movements

  • Pump not included

EnerPlex Never-Leak Queen Camping Airbed

EnerPlex Never-Leak Queen Camping Airbed Review

Amazon rating: 4.4 (1271 ratings)

Price: $

About this Air Mattress

The EnerPlex Never-Leak Queen Camping Airbed is really a great bang for the buck as far as air mattresses go. They are made to be durable but they also know air mattresses can always leak so they offer a 2-year warranty! You really can’t beat that for anything inflatable and that is one reason we think this is the best camping air mattress.

This is also a super comfortable mattress due to the proprietary coil-beam construction which is meant to mimic a common coil mattress you probably have at home.

The Enerplex Airbed comes with an electric pump with both a wall and car adapters so you do need a power source, but you don’t need an extra adapter to use your car as that power source. The pump is very quick too – it only takes a minute and a half to fully inflate.

The only downsides to this mattress are the same for any air mattress – there is always the possibility for leaks and there is always some motion transfer from your partner. But the excellent two year warranty should put your mind at ease for leaks and the coil construction minimizes motion transfer compared to most air mattresses.

If you’re going to go with an air mattress then this is the best air mattress and best camping mattress for couples.

Pros:Cons:
  • 2-Year Warranty

  • Comfortable and inflates quickly with speed pump and car charger included

  • Modestly priced
  • Very few

Big Agnes Insulated SLX Tent Floor Pad

Big Agnes Insulated SLX Tent Floor Pad Review

Amazon rating: 4.6 (15 ratings)

Price: $$$

About this Mattress

The Big Agnes Insulated SLX Tent Floor Pad may be the best camping mattress for couples who backpack. It packs up to 6 x 6 x 11.5 inches and weighs just over 2.5 pounds (1.22 kg) yet still provides a good degree of insulation and comfort. It has an R-value of 3.2 which should be adequate for just below-freezing temperatures (assuming you have a warm sleeping bag as well) but it will not be good enough for very cold nights (below 25°F). If you need a little extra heat, read How to Heat a Tent or The 15 Best Tent Heaters.

It also has a quilted top for extra comfort and is not too loud when you move around at night. I like how the outsides inflate slightly higher to keep you from rolling off but that does reduce the sleeping area a little. Also, it features a dual valve system which allows you to get the air pads perfectly adjusted to your personal preference.

It’s tapered shape is meant to cover the entire floor of a two-person tent which you may or may not like. It’s convenient to have the sleeping pad go all the way to the sides of your tent but some people complain there isn’t extra room put any thing down inside the tent (like a drink). The biggest downside to this mattress is the price tag. That’s not to say it’s not worth the price so if you’re will to fork out $300+ for a very light sleeping pad, this is the best choice.

Pros:Cons:
  • Lightweight and packs up small

  • Provides good insulation for cold weather

  • Dual valves
  • Expensive

Coleman Camping Cot, Air Mattress, and Pump Combo

Coleman Camping Cot, Air Mattress, and Pump Combo Review

Amazon rating: 4.4 (10,660 ratings)

Price: $$

About this Sleep System

The Coleman Camping Cot, Air Mattress, and Pump Combo is a great package if you’re not worried about space or weight (definitely for car camping). Sleeping on an elevated surface can be much more comfortable mentally than lying near the ground. Being elevated can be warmer as well because you don’t have direct contact with the cold ground. Furthermore, you can store stuff under the cot so you actually have more space. Many people report using the cot as a guest bed at home.

The cot’s frame is sturdy and can hold up to 600 lbs. Most people agree that the mattress is comfortable, as it is made with with Coleman’s Trademarked ComfortStrong coil construction as well as their Leak-proof AirTight® system to protect from leaks. Furthermore, the cot has two handy little fold-out side tables.

The only downside is the bulky size and weight – weighing in at over 40 pounds for the queen size!

Pros:Cons:
  • Elevated from the ground for warmth and storage space

  • Sturdy and durable

  • Affordable price
  • Bulky and heavy

KingCamp Deluxe Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad

KingCamp Deluxe Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad Review

Amazon rating: 4.2 (693 ratings)

Price: $$

About this Sleeping Pad

The KingCamp Deluxe Self-Inflating Sleeping Pad tries to be a lightweight option for backpacking while providing a higher degree of comfort but isn’t particular that light or comfortable. Weighing in at 11 pounds and packing up to 26 × 13 × 13 inches, it’s small enough but there are better options if you’re hiking into your campsite (for about the same price, you can get a KLYMIT Double V Sleeping Pad which is about 1/3 the weight).

There are a few good things about this pad, though. First off, it does provide a good amount of insulation from the ground so it may be a good option if you’re sleeping in very cold temperatures. Second, does provide more comfort than most sleeping pads, as it is cushioned with jet stream foam. And finally, it is convenient because it is (mostly) self-inflating. However, it can take up to an hour to inflate and can be difficult to get all the air out and pack back up.

Pros:Cons:
  • Good insulation from the ground

  • More comfortable than most lightweight sleeping pads

  • Self-inflating
  • Heavy for a “lightweight” sleeping pad

  • Not as comfortable as bigger air mattresses

  • Slow to self-inflate

KLYMIT Double V, 2-Person Sleeping Pad

KLYMIT Double V, 2-Person Sleeping Pad Review

Amazon rating: 4.6 (461 ratings)

Price: $$

About this Sleeping Pad

The Klymit Double-V Two-Person Sleeping Pad may be the best camping mattress for couples who backpack but don’t want to spend a fortune on a sleeping pad. Weighing in at 3.3 pounds, it is light enough to take backpacking and won’t break the bank to purchase it.

It’s not quite as comfortable as other, more expensive air mattresses or some of the high-end sleeping pads, but it ranks high when it comes to ease of use as it pumps up very easily. It is designed to reduce motion transfer so don’t expect to feel your partners every move.

The downside of this sleeping pad is that it’s not terribly thick and heavier campers have complained it doesn’t support their weight.

Pros:Cons:
  • Light

  • Reasonable price

  • Reduces motion transfer
  • Doesn’t support heavier campers well

  • Moderate in terms of comfort when compared to more expensive pads

SoundAsleep Camping Series Air Mattress with Eco-Friendly PVC

SoundAsleep Camping Series Air Mattress with Eco-Friendly PVC Review

Amazon rating: 3.9 (1,179 ratings)

Price: $

About this Air Mattress

The SoundAsleep Camping Series Air Mattress is a cheap air-mattress that gets away with a slightly higher price because they claim it’s eco-friendly. The PVC used is proprietary so there’s not much information on how exactly it’s eco-friendly but they claim it’s sourced in the US and all unused material is recycled. However, PVC is just not that eco-friendly of a material by it’s very nature so we’re a bit skeptical on how eco-friendly this product actually is.

Furthermore, it’s not all that comfortable despite being made with ComfortCoil Technology with I-Beam Air Coils.

The one good thing about this mattress is that it does come with a rechargeable pump, ranking it high when it comes to ease-of-use (as long as you remember to recharge it). However, it still weighs almost 14 pounds so it’s definitely a car camping mattress.

We love eco-friendly products but we’re not that impressed with the SoundAsleep air mattress. You’re better off with a EnerPlex Never-Leak Queen Camping Airbed if you want a low-cost air mattress.

Pros:Cons:
  • Rechargeable pump

  • Easy to use
  • Probably not that eco-friendly despite its claims

  • Not very comfortable

  • Somewhat heavy

Intex Classic Downy Airbed

Intex Classic Downy Airbed Review

Amazon rating: 4.1 (5,718 ratings)

Price: $

About this Air Mattress

The Intex Classic Downy Airbed is a slightly souped-up version of a cheap air mattress you might have slept on at your friend’s house in college. I find the bumps that run lengthwise make it impossible to get comfortable sleep and the fact that you have to purchase a pump separately makes it just as expensive as other air mattresses that are far more comfortable.

There are a few positive qualities to this mattress, though. First is that the top is soft and doesn’t slip. So if you feel like you slide around on other mattresses, this mattress just might solve that problem for you.

All-in-all, we’re not a big fan of the Intex Classic Downy Airbed.

Pros:Cons:
  • Soft, non-slip surface
  • Uncomfortable

  • Doesn’t come with pump

  • Not worth the price

The Dually by Hest

The Dually by Hest Review

Google Reviews: 4. (12 reviews)

Price: $$$$

About this Mattress

The Dually by Hest is a premium mattress designed for van life, RVs, truck beds, or rooftop tents. There’s no reason you can’t use it in a tent if you want a more serious mattress for camping and you don’t mind the size and weight. Just keep in mind that it’s not designed for tents or sleeping outside under the stars.

The mattress has four inches of memory foam so it’s great for side sleepers and there is no motion transfer from your partner because the two sides are literally two different pieces. You’re almost guaranteed to get a good night’s sleep. The materials are good quality and it’s build with convenience in mind. The mattress covers come off for easy cleaning and there are pockets to store small items.

The biggest downside is that it only folds in half – it doesn’t pack up like the other mattresses on this list.

The Dually by Hest is a great mattress, keeping in mind that it is designed for use inside a vehicle or covered truck bed. This is more than a camping pad or even camping mattress, it is the best camping bed on this list.

Pros:Cons:
  • Very comfortable

  • Quality materials

  • Designed for convenience
  • Doesn’t pack up

  • Expensive

In Your Prime Double Sleeping pad

In Your Prime Double Sleeping pad Review

Amazon rating: 4.3 (450 ratings)

Price: $

About this Sleeping Pad

The In Your Prime Double Sleeping Pad is a well-liked, ultralight sleeping pad at a killer price. If you’re really trying to make your backpack as light as possible but don’t want to spend a fortune, this sleeping pad is the best option.

Weighing in at just over 2 pounds and coming with a multi-use carry bag, it’s hard to beat the weight. But don’t expect to get a huge amount of comfort or insulation. It’s only about 2 inches thick when inflated, which isn’t too bad when going into the backcountry, but it’s not going to feel like your bed at home either. Furthermore, it has quite a low R value of 2.1 so it doesn’t insulate much from the cold ground.

Nevertheless, for warmer weather, a lighter backpack, and a great price, the In Your Prime Double Sleeping Pad is a great choice.

Pros:Cons:
  • Light

  • Reasonable price

  • Reduces motion transfer
  • Thin

Nemo Roamer

Nemo Roamer Review

Amazon rating: 5.0 (2 ratings)

Price: $$$$

About this Sleeping Pad

The Nemo Roamer is a deluxe self-inflating sleeping pad the uses open-cell foam and might just be the best way to get a good’s night sleep on your camping trip. This is probably the best camping mattress for couples on the list…but it does come at a cost.

The self-inflation works great and is much quicker than most self-inflating mattresses. Also, it’s easy to add a couple extra breaths to make it more firm. Furthermore, it’s easy to pack up thanks to the dual-valve system. The double size weighs 7 lbs. 8 oz., so it’s not exactly ultralight and best for car camping but you could probably take it backpacking if you’re not going too far.

As mentioned, the biggest downside is the price tag. This is probably the most expensive camping mattress on the list. Click the buttons below to check the price and if the price doesn’t scare you off, this is all around the best camping mattress for couples.

Pros:Cons:
  • Very comfortable

  • Fairly small and light

  • Quick self-inflation and easy packing
  • Expensive

Hikenture Double Sleeping Pad

Hikenture Double Sleeping Pad Review

Amazon rating: 4.5 (1,532 ratings)

Price: $

About this Sleeping Pad

The Hikeventure Double Sleeping Pad is a great option for a light, affordable, and comfortable sleeping pad. This is probably the best camping mattress for couples who are side sleepers but still need something they can backpack with.

The pad is surprisingly good when it comes to motion transfer but does make noise when you move on it.

Another downside is that it’s a little tricky to blow up at first, but follow the instructions and you’ll figure it out. You can choose between the foot pump or pumpsack. The foot pump may be easier if you’re concerned about ease of use. I recommend the large size, as the medium is a little tight for two people.

Pros:Cons:
  • Light

  • Affordable

  • Comfortable for its size/weight
  • Makes some noise when moving on it
